1st Annual girlCON 2019: The New "IT" Girl

Many girls are still finding themselves the only girl in a computer science course, and not feeling connected to the idea of a career in technology.  As reported by the Bureau of labor statistics, we see that 92% of nurses are women while only 20% of computer programmers are women. Women are leading men in college degrees with over 55%, yet we many are still "alone" in the computing world. Technology provides enormous career and earning potential for women, with much more flexibility and working options than many other industries!  NCWIT has published a study about "Girls in IT" highlighting some major factors in the lack of girls approaching computing as a career path:  Formal and Informal Education: Computing curriculum that is disconnected from student interests and environments that are uncomfortable for girls Families, Communities, and Role Models: Unequal opportunities and early experience Peer Influences: “Sometimes it’s hard to be the only girl”  Media and Popular Culture The Columbus Chapter of getWITit.org wants to address the missing factors in attracting girls to tech. Please join us in the first of its kind conference for girls in tech ages 7th - 10th grade this June 12th at the Fawcett Center, at the Ohio State University. The event will feature not only labs that will give girls hands-on experience, in an environment made for girls and the way they learn, but foster a sense of community as well as connecting the dots to motivate girls to want to approach technical fields. We will deliver a full day of FUN and learning with:  Hands on programming lab with Rasberry Pi Robotics "IT" Girls and Careers in Technology  3D Printing Gaming and Virtual Reality
