Community Event: Ideas at the Intersection of Science & Design

“Mistakes are great. The more I make the smarter I get.” Buckminster Fuller, perhaps America’s greatest 20th Century example of the scientific designer, spoke of “mistakes” as essential to the design process. Or was he speaking of science? Thinkers and writers have long debated the relationship between science and design, providing inspiration for a lively evening of presentation and discussion on such questions as: How is “design thinking” similar to, or different from, the practice of scientific inquiry? What can science tell us about the aesthetics of design? How does the “appearance of design” in nature emerge (from a scientific perspective)? How does design illuminate the public understanding of science? How does math express “beauty?” Feats of engineering as achievements in design. How does the “design” of scientific experiment reflect design in other disciplines? How has technology enhanced the practice of design (e.g. in fashion, movies, etc.)? Join a broad community of designers, science researchers, engineers and technologists to shed light on this effervescent topic, hosted by Roto, one of the country's leading creators of museums, zoos and aquariums.  Beer, wine and appetizers will be offered, along with tours of Roto's design and production facility.     Confirmed Speakers: Jake Kuttothara & Brooks Myers, Founders of Knockout ConceptsMobile 3D scanning software for custom fit prosthetics Tom Ramsay, Senior Engineer, HondaNSX supercar: science of airflow & design integration Danae Wolfe, Environmental Educator, PhotographerAesthetics of capturing the natural world Jason Cervenec, Director of Education / Principal Investigator, Byrd Polar Research CenterEarth systems science & the design of cities Matthew Mohr, Digital Artist / Associate Professor CCADGCCC “As We Are” interactive sculpture J.M.
