      Saturday Samplings:Viva Espana!

Spain is like the wild, wild west when it comes to wine. Unlike France, where individual plots of land have been set aside for centuries as the best spots for winemaking, producers in Spain are still out searching for new terroirs, new regions and new (old) indigenous grape varieties that have been pushed aside in favor of commercial winemaking. 1.Can Petit Cava Brut  14.99 Bright, pale, straw yellow color with a persistent mousse of fine bubbles and aroma of rich, ripe apples. Well structured with an excellent balance between ripe fruit and acidity. Long, smooth finish. 2. Laxas Albarino  16.99 Fruity and floral aromas of apple, stone fruits, and lemon. Silky and soft on the palate with pear, honeysuckle, and slight orange flavors and a touch of minerality. 3. Bodegas Ochoa 'Calendas' Tempranillo-Garnacha  10.99 Dark ruby color. Blackberry aroma. Firm structure. Plum and black fruit flavors. Soft finish with notes of raspberry. 4. Lar de Sotomayor Rioja 17.99 Inky ruby color with dark berry, cherry, cured meat, and tobacco aromas. Jammy fruit with notes of smoked meat and herbal flavors. Smooth finish with a hint of dark chocolate. 5. Milcampos Ribera del Duero  14.99 Dark berry, cherry, and slight peppery aromas. Herbs, concentrated blackberry, cherry, and vanilla flavors with a touch of pepper. Medium to full body. Balanced. Soft finish with notes of mocha and oak.     Wines will be accompanied by a selection of cheeses, canapes, crackers, artisan breads &olive oil. The cost for one flight (a sample of each of the wines) will be $15.
